Glasgow conference hosts first CEA fellowship awards
The CEA annual conference was held at the University of Glasgow from 5 to 7
August 2025, on digital transformation and economic structural change.
The association reports more than 200 participants, from China, the United
Kingdom, France, Ireland and South Korea. Some 140 papers were discussed across
28 parallel sessions, and the conference held a job market session for the first
time.
A separate gallery post published by the association on 8 August 2025 gives the
figure as more than 150. Both are the association's own counts and neither is
reconciled here; the higher figure is used in this report because it accompanies
the fuller account of the programme.
The opening was addressed by the principal of the University of Glasgow, Anton
Muscatelli, the dean of the Adam Smith Business School, Graeme Roy, and the 2024
CEA president, Mi Zhifu. Editors and board members of several international
journals presented their titles, and Dong Yizhe, the incoming editor-in-chief of
the association's journal, the Journal of Chinese Economic and Business
Studies, set out his plans for it and presented several awards.
The conference established and conferred the association's fellowship for the
first time. The fellowship is the association's highest honour, recognising
scholars who have contributed substantially to the association and to research
on the Chinese economy. The board resolved unanimously to elect 14 scholars to
the inaugural cohort.
A roundtable sponsored by the Bank of China discussed Chinese economic growth and
the internationalisation of the renminbi. The conference dinner was held at the
Grosvenor Hotel.
The CEA board met during the conference, where Mi Zhifu reported on the previous
year. Among its decisions was the election of Shi Yukun of the University of
Glasgow as the association's 37th president.
