Xiamen workshop examines artificial intelligence and the digital economy
The Chinese Economic Association UK/Europe and Xiamen University held a two-day
workshop on artificial intelligence and the digital economy, together with a
forum on economics education in China, at Xiamen University on 27 and 28 December
2025.
The workshop was organised jointly by Xiamen University's Gregory and Paula Chow
Institute for Studies in Economics, its Wang Yanan Institute for Studies in
Economics and its School of Economics, the association, and the digital economy
committee of the China Development Strategy Research Society.
Fourteen invited speakers gave keynote reports over the two days, on artificial
intelligence governance, digital economic transformation, financial technology
innovation and new forms of financial risk control.
A roundtable on 28 December brought the visiting specialists together with
teaching staff from Xiamen University's economics departments to discuss how
economics education in China should develop, how talent is trained and how
disciplines should intersect as teaching becomes more digital.
The workshop was hosted by Xiamen University's Macroeconomic Research Centre, a
key research base of the Ministry of Education, and by the Xiamen University and
Chinese Academy of Sciences Basic Science Centre for Econometric Modelling and
Economic Policy Research.
The opening session on the morning of 27 December was chaired by Li Shumin, vice
chairman of the China Development Strategy Research Society and executive
director of its digital economy committee. Addresses were given by Hong Yongmiao
of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences and director of Xiamen
University's Chow institute, Shi Yukun, chair of the association, and Zhou
Yinggang, dean of Xiamen University's School of Economics and of the Wang Yanan
Institute.
Shi Yukun set out the association's history, its academic standing and its
exchange and cooperation work, and underlined its role in improving public
understanding of the Chinese economy and in supporting research on China's
high-quality development. He said the decision to run the research workshop
alongside the education forum was intended to use Sino-European academic exchange
as a route to developing younger scholars. Zhou Yinggang recalled that Xiamen
University had co-hosted the association's annual conference in 2023.
