His research has advanced understanding of how institutions, political ideology<\/p>\n\n\n\n
and culture interact with accounting and corporate governance in transitional<\/p>\n\n\n\n
economies such as China. His work has appeared in Accounting, Organizations and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Society, among other journals, and covers the tension between international and<\/p>\n\n\n\n
domestic accounting standards, accounting change under shifting institutional<\/p>\n\n\n\n
logics, and the practical operation of corporate governance mechanisms. Public<\/p>\n\n\n\n
statistics indicate that between 1978 and 2008 his papers on Chinese accounting<\/p>\n\n\n\n
ranked among the highest internationally for both output and quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has also contributed to the discipline's infrastructure. He was co-editor of<\/p>\n\n\n\n
the British Accounting Review<\/em>, the flagship journal of the British Accounting<\/p>\n\n\n\n and Finance Association, from 2021 to 2025, and was founding co-editor of the<\/p>\n\n\n\n China Journal of Accounting Studies<\/em> from 2009 to 2015.
